Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy
Program Mission Statement
The Public Policy undergraduate program at Kentucky State University aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of public policy, policy-making processes, governance, and governmental relations. The program fosters critical thinking, analytical skills, and ethical decision-making to address complex societal challenges. Graduates will be prepared to effectively engage with public institutions, advocate for policy change, and contribute to the development of informed and innovative solutions in both public and private sectors, promoting transparency, accountability, and social justice.
Program Objectives
The Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy will develop professionals who possess the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding necessary to influence and shape public policy. The program aims to provide students with a deep understanding of the political, economic, and social factors that impact governance and policy decisions. Graduates will be equipped to analyze policy issues, advocate effectively, communicate with diverse stakeholders, and engage in government relations strategies. The program prepares students for careers in the management of public affairs, advocacy, non-profit leadership, consultancy, urban administration, and other roles that contribute to the effective formulation and implementation of public policy.
Students will learn:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the legislative processes of public policy and government structures.
- Prepare students to effectively engage in government relations and advocacy efforts at local, national, and international levels.
- Develop communication and negotiation skills for interacting with diverse stakeholders in the policy environment.
- Train students for careers in management of public affairs, policy analysis, non-profit organizations, advocacy, consultancy, urban administration, and related fields.
- Encourage innovative approaches to policy challenges and solutions for societal issues.
- Promote leadership and professional development for effective engagement in both public and private sector roles related to government and policy.
- Empower students with the tools to influence public opinion and policy change through effective communication and public engagement strategies.
- Build a strong foundation in ethics and governance to ensure responsible policy advocacy and decision-making.
- Promote adaptability and problem-solving skills to address emerging and evolving societal and global challenges.
- Cultivate expertise in policy research methodologies to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of policies.
- Foster understanding of international relations and global policy trends to work effectively in cross-cultural and global contexts.
