Dismissal Procedures

Academic Advisement Review

Maintaining high standards and high supports, students may be required to participate in an Academic Advisement Review. These reviews will occur if concerns arise regarding the student’s academic and/or professional performance or demeanor. Reviews will occur in the following instances:

  1. If a student earns a “C” in a course;
  2. If any faculty member, including field liaisons, assesses a student to be in academic/professional difficulty, including violations of the professional code of ethics; Social Work Program Handbook; or Field Handbook
  3. If a student wishes to have a formal academic advisement review—beyond the normative advising process.

Requests for a review will be conveyed to the BSW Director/Chair. The BSW Director/Chair will designate persons to participate in this review—typically, the student’s faculty advisor and/or the BSW Director. Usually, this review will involve a face-to-face meeting. The student may also request that the BSW Student Representative participate in this meeting. If preferred, the student may suggest another person as their peer support; the BSW Director and/or Chair will decide whether this substitution can be present. This academic advisement meeting will conclude with a student success plan and/or other documentation resolving the concerns. This success plan will be reviewed per agreement, as documented in the initial meeting. This Advisement process is compatible with the Field Education review process and may include field supervisor’s input as pertinent. (See form below).

Bases for Possible Dismissal from BSW Program

Failure to meet the expectations set forth in the NASW Code of Ethics is grounds for dismissal from the program, including deviation from:

  1. Accepted standards of professional conduct,
    1. standards of personal integrity and honesty,
    2. emotional stability requisite for professional practice,
    3. effective interpersonal skills necessary for forming professional helping relationships with clients, supervisors, faculty, and colleagues, and
    4. appropriate or productive professional behaviors, attitudes, and values, whether demonstrated at school, in the field practicum setting, or in one’s employment setting, or other roles.
  2. Severe maladaptation to the educational process for the social work profession including:
    1. Student inability to assume responsibility for her/his own learning, such as an excessive reliance on the written work of others by:
      1. using any printed sources, paraphrased or quoted, without proper acknowledgment; and
      2. using the work of other learners without crediting the source: or
    2. Student’s inability to participate productively in a classroom situation, such as
      1. consistent pattern of inadequate class preparation,
      2. unpunctual completion of assignments, or
      3. irresponsible behavior in class or field.
  3. Lack of commitment to the values of the social work profession, as evidenced through:
    1. Intolerant/discriminatory/prejudicial behavior and/or attitudes expressed in the classroom, field placement agency, work setting or volunteer service site.
    2. Students are expected to exhibit an openness of mind, a willingness to explore new ideas, and self-examination of their own attitudes and prejudices. Discriminatory behaviors will not be tolerated.
    3. Behavior in the personal sphere that would damage professional credibility, e.g. conviction of domestic violence, fraud, assault, or like situation.
  4. Personal problems, which significantly and consistently prevent her/him/them from functioning effectively in a professional social work education program.
  5. Professional misrepresentation such as:
    1. Events surrounding an incident involving professional conduct
    2. Fabrication of client data pertaining to course or internship assignments
    3. Professional qualifications, education, experience, or affiliations
  6. Failure in field instruction is grounds for dismissal from the program, subject to review by the BSW Director and Field Director. Although it happens infrequently, a learner may be removed from field placement in three ways:
    1. request of the agency field instructor and/or agency;
    2. request of the learner; or
    3. request of the School as represented by the Faculty Field Liaison and/or Director of Field.
  7. Violations of the Kentucky State University policies regarding Academic and/or Behavior Misconduct as described in the University Catalog.
  8. Violations of the Kentucky State University polices outlined in the Student Handbook such as violence or threatening of violence on campus, etc.
  9. The program requires on-going BSW students to inform the Program Director of any change in legal status as soon as it occurs, for example, an arrest or conviction, whether misdemeanor or felony.

In all situations, student rights will be scrupulously protected in accordance with the appeal procedures of the School of Social Work and Kentucky State University.

Process of Termination

Termination procedures may be undertaken prior to as well as following formal admission to the BSW program.

If a BSW student, in the majority opinion of the Social Work Faculty, violates the 2017 revised NASW Code of Ethics (see next section) or other professional standards, the student is subject to the following process as outlined in the University Catalog

Undergraduate and graduate students in professional programs must act in accordance with the standards, ethics, and conduct of their profession when fulfilling any of their program requirements (e.g., practicum, externship, internship, research work) and while performing any work or activities related to their profession (e.g., a job or an assistantship).

Exhibiting dishonest and/or unprofessional behavior according to standards set in and for the student's professional discipline may be cause for dismissal from a program. The University reserves the right to make final decisions on sanctions and dismissals related to ethical/professional misconduct.
