Students in the Elements of Fashion and Home Decor certificate will survey an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to the study of design including fashion, interior decor, home environments, housing, and related consumer concerns. The courses will address: Design Elements and Principles for the Consumer including application of the arts and appreciation for the aesthetics of design; Apparel Construction and Analysis which incorporates garment construction, fundamentals of fashion apparel production, emphasis on consumer quality, and elements of design; Housing and Home Environment which includes exploration of design and changing technology in interior environments; human behavior, aesthetic concerns, and analysis of housing trends and alternatives; and finally, Consumer Economics and Resource Management will explore financial management, consumer economics, resource management, consumer protection, energy, environmental concerns, and related matters. The certificate will require 4 classes totaling 12 credit hours of course work. Courses will include:

This certificate program will complement the AFE and other degree offerings at KSU. It can provide an interim degree for those pursuing AFE, art, business, education and behavioral and social sciences degrees. Interim degrees have been shown to positively impact retention and graduation rates.
